Alongside the 30-year-old Queenslander – whose round included six birdies and a bogey – at the top of the leaderboard is Thailand’s Phachara Khongwatmai, who had a third-round of 66.
A shot behind is New Zealand’s Ben Campbell, who matched Smith’s 65.
Harrison Crowe, who only turned professional in September, is the next best-placed Australian after a third-round of 69 lifted him to 11-under.
Veteran Queenslander Scott Hend zoomed up the leaderboard with an impressive 65 that moved him to eight-under.
