The Kiwi Ferns dynamic duo
Not only do the Kiwi Ferns have Raecene McGregor – a Dally M medal-winning halfback – they also have Olympic Medallist Tyla Nathan-Wong as their playmaker.
The two are teammates at the Dragons, and have spent the past four months getting to know each other’s game during the 2023 NRLW season. Now, the combination has clicked, which is why it was so surprising when Kiwi Ferns coach Ricky Henry had Nathan-Wong start on the bench in their 16-10 defeat to Australia.
Now, I don’t want to say I told you so, but when Nathan-Wong and McGregor were paired in the halves last week, they walked away with the win. They could be the difference between a victory or a defeat tonight.
Can the Jillaroos win?
Upton proves herself on international stage
Australia’s secret weapon is no secret at all – she’s one of the best rugby league players in the World.
Tamika Upton, the 2023 Dally M medal winner and 2023 fullback of the year, was absolutely amazing in her international debut two weeks ago for the Jillaroos, scoring two tries to clench the win.
After injury sidelined her from a Jillaroos squad in the World Cup last year, Upton did not disappoint against the Kiwi Ferns, running the ball around the park and slipping through the Ferns defensive line in the same way she did to win back-to-back NRLW grand finals this year.
She starts at fullback again tonight, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more points flowing from her.
Welcome
Good evening, and welcome to our live coverage of the Pacific Championships.
It’s a busy night for rugby league, with the Jillaroos taking on the Kiwi Ferns from 6pm, followed by the Kangaroos taking on the Ferns at 8:10pm.
A few changes to both our Australian teams (more on that later), but two strong sides to try and beat New Zealand in a trans-Tasman rivalry.
