Hawks open their arms to Ginnivan as Pies consider move; Port under real pressure as deadline looms

Collingwood will meet on Wednesday morning to consider what they would require to trade contracted premiership forward Jack Ginnivan to Hawthorn after it became clear on Tuesday afternoon that the 20-year-old was exploring his options following the Magpies’ decision to recruit Fremantle’s Lachie Schultz.

Ginnivan, who met Hawthorn on Tuesday afternoon, has a four-year contract offer in front of him from the Hawks.

Even though he has not formally requested a trade, it appears that the parties will move towards finalising a deal. The Magpies believe he could be worth Hawthorn’s future second-round selection.

The Hawks want a small forward to replace Tyler Brockman, who left for West Coast on the weekend, and bolster an attack that was heavily reliant on Mitch Lewis and veteran Luke Breust in 2023. The Hawks view Ginnivan as being part of their best 22 in 2024, but it’s unlikely they would agree to hand over their future second-round pick.

Collingwood are aware that, after recruiting Schultz from Fremantle, opportunities may be limited for Ginnivan in 2024 – even though the controversial goalkicker has kicked 58 goals in 42 games so far, including slotting 40 goals in 2022. He played as a substitute in the first two finals but started on the ground in the grand final, however he stands behind Bobby Hill, Jamie Elliott, Schultz and Beau McCreery at Collingwood.

“He’s not requested a trade, but there’s been discussions on what is best for Jack,” Ginnivan’s manager John Meesen said.

Port Adelaide and Hawthorn need to get busy

Hawthorn and Port Adelaide are the two clubs under the most pressure heading into the final day of the trade period, with neither club completing a deal so far but with four players wanting to get to each club.

The Hawks have Mabior Chol, Massimo D’Ambrosio, Jack Gunston and now Ginnivan as potential recruits, while Port Adelaide are looking to bring in Esava Ratugolea, Jordon Sweet, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and potentially Ivan Soldo. Port midfielder Xavier Duursma hopes to join Essendon.

Hawthorn expects D’Ambrosio to join them as a delisted free agent after offering late picks to the Bombers for the former mid-season draft selection, while Chol will not be traded until just before the deadline as the Suns and the Hawks haggle over future picks. The Hawks are also looking to offload Jacob Koschitzke and aren’t expecting the Tigers to hand over pick No.29 for the forward.

Dow and Coffield change clubs in four-club deal

Progress on those deals will accelerate on Wednesday morning after a four-club deal in which Carlton’s Paddy Dow joined St Kilda and the Saints’ Nick Coffield joined the Western Bulldogs. The deal had been holding up other deals as the Blues, Saints, Bulldogs and Essendon were focused on completing the trade.

Carlton gave up Dow, future third- and fourth-round picks, and gained a future third round tied to Essendon, a future fourth round tied to the Dockers, and the Bulldogs’ future fourth-round selection.

St Kilda gave up Coffield, pick 35, pick 56 and a future fourth-round pick tied to Fremantle and received Dow, pick 40 and a future third-round pick. The Western Bulldogs gained Coffield and picks 52 and 56, and traded out pick 40 and a future fourth-round pick. Essendon also gave up picks 52 and a future third-round pick for pick 35 and a future fourth-round pick.

It remains to be seen whether the Bombers will be prepared to offer Port Adelaide a pick to ensure the deal to get Duursma to the club in exchange for Zerk-Thatcher happens. Zerk-Thatcher’s management have been adamant he will go to the pre-season draft if a deal can’t be done before the trade deadline.

The Blues are interested in securing Elijah Hollands from the Suns, while St Kilda is open to trading Jack Billings.

McAdam a Demon but no shift on Petty

In the other deal completed on Tuesday, ex-Crow Shane McAdam joined Melbourne for the Demons’ future second-round pick. Adelaide pursued contracted Melbourne swingman Harry Petty, who is from South Australia, as part of the negotiations, but Demons list boss Tim Lamb did not deviate from his stance that the 23-year-old was staying in red and blue. The Crows offered Melbourne pick No.14 and McAdam for Petty, which the Demons rejected. Melbourne still have Sydney’s future second-round selection from the Brodie Grundy trade, so they conceivably can still include their future first-rounder in any deal to try to move up the draft order.

The Demons also hold picks six and 11 this year. McAdam, 28, has kicked 72 goals in 50 games, but has never played more than 15 matches in any of his four seasons to date.
