How one frantic hour will shape rest of the trade period: State of play on biggest AFL deals

With a week to go in the trade period, things are starting to take shape.

Wednesday afternoon saw some big moves get confirmed, with Brodie Grundy, Taylor Adams and a slew of early draft picks changing hands among the flurry of late deals completed.

A dozen players have already found new homes and six first-round draft picks have already changed hands on the opening days.

While plenty are still waiting for their trade request to be fulfilled and land at their new club, Wednesday’s trades have opened the door for deals to happen.

Here is the state of play for every player waiting to get traded, and how the deals might look when they drop.

Things are reportedly getting “testy” as negotiations over Esava Ratugolea continue between the Cats and Port Adelaide.

After the Power did a deal on the opening day that saw them net an extra second round pick (pick 24), which looked to be enough to get the deal done, it was quickly knocked back by the Cats, leaving the parties a fair way apart.

The Power are set for another busy trade period as they also remain locked in talks with Essendon over a deal which could involve both Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Xavier Duursma.

While the Bombers may be interested in a straight swap, the Power value Duursma higher – and they may need to know which pick they send off for Ratugolea before completing this one.

Because of this, Dogs ruckman Jordon Sweet’s arrival at Alberton might have to wait until the Power clear one or both of their major hurdles, before the deal gets done for a late pick.

Across town, the Crows acquired themselves an extra first round selection, getting Gold Coast’s much sought-after pick 11 in a deal that also saw the Crows land the 2023 VFL Frosty Miller Medallist Chris Burgess.

Adelaide remains in negotiations with Melbourne over a deal for Shane McAdam, with the Crows throwing everything at their aggressive pursuit to prise contracted Demons swingman Harrison Petty as part of the deal.

But according to the Herald Suns Jon Ralph, Petty will be remaining at the Demons and not part of any trade.

A deal to send Lions backup ruckman Tom Fullarton to Melbourne appears imminent with the Dees looking set to part with pick 46 according to SEN’s Sam Edmund, to bolster their ruck stocks after they moved on a deal for Brodie Grundy yesterday.

The Blues completed their first involvement of the trade period yesterday in a deal that sent Zac Fisher to North Melbourne with the Blues’ first round pick (currently 17) in exchange for the Roos’ picks 21 and 25.

The deal, along with other transactions yesterday. now see the Kangaroos holding five first-round selections in this year’s draft (2, 3, 15, 17, 18) with eyes firmly fixated on their next move to see if and when they make a play for West Coast’s pick 1.

The Eagles remain firm on taking the pick to the draft, where they are likely to take Harley Reid but are yet to firmly shut the door on a “special” offer to give it up. It’s unclear whether they truly want to go to the draft, or are just positioning themselves to drive a very hard bargain.

With the picks netted in the deal for Fisher, foxfooty.com.au understands that the Blues are one of several clubs interested in Geelong’s first round selection (currently pick 8) and could use those picks as part of a package to trade up the draft board.

Carlton is still yet to commence talks with Gold Coast over a possible deal for former first-round pick Elijah Hollands. The Suns now have a huge haul of picks, enabling them to match bids for four gun Academy prospects in the draft, but whether they’ll trade the 21-year-old before the trade deadline remains uncertain.

The Blues will also work out a deal to send Paddy Dow to St Kilda in what should be simple enough.

The Saints are also expected to facilitate a deal to move former first-round pick Nick Coffield to the Western Bulldogs, but like Dow could be held up due to other priorities.

They’re still working through an offer to put to Fremantle for livewire Liam Henry who requested a move to Moorabbin. The Dockers are after a late first round pick for their former Next Generation Academy product, but the Saints currently don’t have the draft capital (picks 13 and 34) to strike an appropriate deal without tipping into a full bank of future picks.

Holding all of this up is the free agency move of Jade Gresham. Once Essendon’s offer lands, and the Saints know which compensation pick they’ll earn, they can move on their other deals. The club has said it will match an offer if they won’t earn an end-of-first-round pick or better.

Collingwood is prepared to offer their first pick in the draft (pick 19) to secure Fremantle forward Lachie Schultz but might need to stump up a little bit more after their initial offer was rejected by the Dockers.

The Magpies acquired an extra second round pick yesterday in a deal that saw Taylor Adams make his way to the Sydney Swans, giving the Pies four picks to work with in this upcoming draft.

Bombers paid ‘way overs’ for McKay! | 02:18

Essendon have done most of their shopping already, landing Todd Goldstein and Ben McKay as free-agents, but still have some work to do as they remain locked in talks with Port Adelaide over the Zerk-Thatcher and Duursma situation.

Running defender Massimo D’Ambrosio is expected to be dealt to Hawthorn late in the trade period, with a late pick coming back the Bombers way.

The Hawks are busy trying to satisfy the Gold Coast in a deal for forward Mabior Chol.

The Suns completed a host of deals yesterday to secure ample amounts of draft points for their first-round bound academy selections and will likely accept a future pick from the Hawks in a deal for Chol. But for now, they don’t seem keen on the offer of a future third.

The Hawks still have a bit of dealing to do in facilitating moves for Tyler Brockman to go back to Western Australia, with West Coast still favoured to land the small forward despite late interest from Fremantle who are threatening to swoop in at the last moment.

Hawthorn will also work on a deal for forward Jacob Koschitzke to get to Richmond.
