‘Why?’: K-Pop superstar’s QLD Origin jersey enters bizarre Aussie sporting mysteries file

Australian sporting jerseys have a habit of popping up where you least expect them — and the latest global mystery is a corker.

An eagle-eyed reddit user spotted South Korean pop star Haewon ‘inexplicably’ wearing a Queensland Maroons jersey during a performance by girl group Nmixx, in a video posted by Mnet K-POP, which has almost 20 million followers.

Pictures of Haewon wearing the jersey were also posted on Nmixx’s Instagram account, which has nearly 3 million followers.

With little context available on the bizarre attire choice, social media users speculated what was going on — with one theory that it might have something to do with the fact one of Haewon’s bandmates, Lily, was born in Australia. Others suggested it could be an omen for the North Queensland Cowboys as they bid to reach the NRL grand final.

It evokes memories of some of the other great Aussie jersey mysteries from recent years.

The curious case of John Cusack wearing a Kangaroos jersey in the 1985 film The Sure Thing was a bizarre only but solved (kind of) a couple of years ago.

Then there was the mystery man wearing an Australia A cricket jersey at Super Bowl 30 — a case that has also been closed thanks to the wonders of social media.

Maybe Haewon, like so many, is just an admirer of Queensland‘s remarkable Origin resurgence in this year’s series, or a fan of the Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater-led dynasty of last decade. Could you blame her?
