Aussie superstar steps away for second season to focus on young family

Diamond Gretel Bueta will not be returning to the Queensland Firebirds next season, the Australian netball star has confirmed.

Bueta, who missed the 2023 season to give birth to her second child in August, announced her decision on social media, stating she would once again take time away from the game to be with family.

“A little change of pace for 2024,” she posted.

“I’ll be spending my time with our beautiful boys as they are growing up before our eyes, (brand) springblend and building our family home on the Gold Coast.”

The Firebirds then shared Bueta’s “wonderful news” and wished her well on her break.

It’s a big call from the 30-year-old who stepped away from the sport after Australia’s Commonwealth Games gold medal success in 2022.

Fellow netball great Maria Folau joked Bueta could “take a break for 10 years and you would still school everyone” as the well-wishes rolled in.

Bueta becomes the third confirmed player not returning to the Firebirds for season 2024 – following the club’s decision to delist both veteran Gabi Simpson and goaler Mia Stower.

In another confirmed move, Lauren Moore has announced she won’t be returning to the Giants for next season.

Moore had crossed from the NSW Swifts ahead of the 2022 season, but struggled for court time in her debut year at the club.

Despite more opportunities at goal keeper this season, the 25-year-old will instead explore her options.

“I am so grateful for the opportunities I was given both on and off the court but most importantly the people I’ve had the chance to cross paths with and the bonds I’ve been able to create,” Moore said.

“Even though change is scary, I’m so excited for the opportunity to dive into something new where I hope to continue to grow and thrive as both a player and person.

“I will miss my GIANTS family and the Orange Army but thank you for being part of my journey.”

Coach Julie Fitzgerald paid tribute to Moore’s influence in just two seasons at the club.

“Lauren had some standout performances for us at the backend of the season and it’s a shame we won’t be seeing her continue her future in the orange and charcoal,” she said.

“It‘s tricky time, with such uncertainty and we wish her all the best for what the future holds.”

As a CPA is yet to be signed, no team can officially start filling their 10-player roster for next season.

Moore becomes the third Giant to depart the club, following on from April Brandley’s retirement and Amy Parmenter’s decision to move away.
