Logan McDonald’s omission from the Sydney Swans’ starting 22 has made for a big grand final selection call, with his replacement set to break a longstanding record.
McDonald was replaced by Hayden McLean in the Swans’ only change heading into the decider against Geelong on Saturday.
McLean hasn’t played at senior level since round eight, making for a 140-day gap between senior games.

It’s the second-biggest gap for players listed as inclusions for a grand final, with only Robert Neill in 1997 having a bigger gap (174 days).
Neill finished with three disposals.
McLean kicked four goals in the Swans’ VFL semi-final loss two weeks ago, also taking nine marks.
“I don’t think Logan McDonald has been playing great football to be honest,” AFL 360 co-host Mark Robinson said.
“He’s a young kid and he’s still growing with his game, but I don’t think he was a walk-up to play this week. He’s been solid, but nothing outstanding.
“With Reid hurting himself and the Swans saying we can’t throw him into the ruck, we’re going to run a risk, lets just keep him forward, McDonald can’t ruck so they bring in Hayden McLean to maybe come as the third tall and spend a bit of time on the bench.”
