Grand Final stunner: Swans’ top pick set for heartbreak in bombshell report

Former pick No.4 Logan McDonald is reportedly set to be left out of the starting 22 when Sydney names its grand final side on Thursday night.

Nine News reporter Braden Ingram reported on Thursday that McDonald would be left out of the side in favour of Hayden McLean.

McDonald, Ingram added, could come back into the side as either the medical substitute or a replacement for fellow forward Sam Reid should Reid not be deemed fit to play.

Grand Final

McDonald, the Swans’ first pick in the 2020 draft when they made two top-five selections, has played 17 senior games this season, including five consecutive outings since round 21.

He has kicked one goal from the sides’ two finals games.

McLean hasn’t played a senior game since round eight and managed 10 goals from his eight games.

Doubt remains over Reid’s ability to play in Saturday’s clash as he manages an adductor injury suffered in the preliminary final win over Collingwood, which saw him subbed out.

Justin McInerney is another whose selection remains uncertain but is considered more likely than Reid to take to the field, as he manages an ankle injury.

Another option to replace Reid or McDonald is Joel Amartey, who has played six senior games this season.

Geelong’s main selection call centres around Max Holmes, with the in-form wingman racing the clock to overcome a hamstring injury in time for Saturday’s game.

Holmes was subbed out of the preliminary final win against Brisbane last Saturday but covered a significant amount of ground in his time onfield.

Despite initial fears he’d be a forced out for this week’s game, Holmes is remarkably still in the frame for selection, completing running and kicking drills throughout the week.

The teams for the Grand Final will be revealed here tonight at 6:20pm EST.
