Roosters prodigy in giant cross-code tug-of-war; son of gun could exit NRL: Transfer Whispers

Roosters rising star Siua Wong is reportedly being courted by two rugby union nations while rival NRL clubs are reportedly preparing to swoop for his services.

That is according to the SMH, who are reporting the 20-year-old is one of rugby league’s most in-demand players after stamping his mark on the competition.

Wong has only played seven first grade games and made his debut in Round 18 before delivering a mammoth performance in the Tricolours’ finals win over the Sharks.

His current contract expires at the end of the 2024 season, with multiple NRL clubs reportedly interested in signing the backrower currently earning only $180,000-per-season.

Roosters powerbrokers have reportedly began discussing an extension and Wong has previously been offered a contract with the Waratahs.

The Tricolours brought the young gun to Sydney at only 15, where he attended Scots College and starred in both the 15-man and 13-man codes.

Wong is reportedly still a target of Rugby Australia who have the drawcard of the Lions tour in 2025 and a World Cup in 2027.

He is also eligible to play for five different nations in Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, New Zealand and Australia, having grown up in Christchurch.

The New Zealand Rugby Union are keen on his services, with New Zealand rugby league also keen for him to represent the Kiwis.

Coach Michael Maguire has reportedly gone as far as sitting down with the gun backrower to discuss his looming decision.

SAILOR’S SUITOR

Broncos flyer Tristan Sailor has reportedly been offered to multiple Super League clubs in a shock move only months after signing a contract extension.

The 25-year-old was upgraded to the top 30 in July after he was originally signed on a development contract.

However, according to Hull Live, Hull FC are reportedly hopeful of securing his services ahead of the 2024 season.

Sailor spent an extended period out of the game due to off-field issues, but has been solid for the Broncos this season when called upon, playing four games.

After signing his extension, coach Kevin Walters heaped praise on the outside back.

“Tristan has been really impressive since joining us at the start of the pre-season, he is a real footballer and he has worked hard and now he is reaping the rewards for that dedication,” Walters said in a club statement.

“He has been playing some fantastic footy in Cup and then he has stepped up when we have called on him in first grade and done a great job for his team.

“He brings a lot off the field as well around the group and I’m sure his dad (Wendell) and all his family will be filled with pride that he is continuing on their legacy here at the Broncos – it’s just a really good news story.”
