Cricket Victoria and James Pattinson have parted ways after 14 years, with the former Test star taking an extended break from the game.
A statement on Wednesday confirmed the 32-year-old and CV had come to a mutual agreement to tear up his contract for the 2022-23 season with a potential retirement now looming.
Pattinson was also released by county side Nottinghamshire last month due to fitness and family reasons.

“This decision has been a really difficult one for me given my how much I love playing for Victoria and have given it my all for the last 14 years,” Pattinson said in the statement.
“After the birth of our second child and my now well-documented injuries in recent years, it’s the right time to take a break from the game.
“I owe it to my teammates and myself and at the moment it’s clear I need the rest. It will also allow me to spend more time at home with our daughters.”
He added: “Some of my fondest memories playing cricket have been for Victoria, the success we’ve had and friendships I’ve made.
“The fire still burns deep in me but I’m also honest about where I’m at.”
Pattinson won the Sheffield Shield with Victoria three times; in 2014/15, 2016/2017 and 2018/19.
The enforcer rose through the ranks to play 21 Tests for Australia, taking 81 wickets at 26.33, which included a 5-27 against New Zealand in his 2011 debut.
Repeat injuries heavily hampered Pattinson’s international career, however, with his 40 international appearances being spread out over more than eight years.
Cricket Victoria’s general manager of cricket performance, Graham Manou, said: “As his teammates and opposition batters will attest, James has been one of the fiercest competitors in Australian cricket.
“He has an ability to inspire his teammates combined with his exceptional skill level is something we’ll miss.
“We wish James well as he takes this time to prioritise his family and his health.”
