Lance Franklin will return to the SCG for a lap of honour against Melbourne in round 24.
Franklin called time on his decorated career because of a calf injury during Sydney’s win over Essendon in round 20. However, the champion forward, who played 354 games and booted 1066 goals, eschewed the opportunity to have a farewell press conference.
But a Swans spokesman confirmed on Friday that Franklin has agreed to a lap of honour at half-time during Sunday week’s match against the Demons.
As reported by this masthead, Sydney chairman Andrew Pridham last week said the club wanted to give Franklin – one of the greatest and most electrifying players in the game’s modern history – a tribute.
“The hope is we’ll do it on the Sunday of the final round. We definitely want to do something [for Franklin]. We’ll see what he wants to do,” Pridham said.
While the Swans did not win a premiership with “Buddy” in the decade after he crossed from Hawthorn on a $10 million, nine-year contract, they made three grand finals (2014, 2016 and 2022) and experienced huge growth as a club during the Franklin years.
