Buddy Franklin set to return to SCG for lap of honour after AFL retirement

Lance Franklin is set to return to the SCG for a final farewell in Round 24.

After 354 games and 1066 goals, Franklin retired with little fanfare following a calf injury in Sydney’s round 20 win over Essendon.

Foxfooty.com.au understands Franklin is planning to return to the SCG and take part in a halftime lap of honour during Sunday week’s clash with Melbourne.

Saints brace for high stakes Cats clash | 00:55

Club CEO Tom Harley and coach John Longmire fronted a press conference confirming the news of Franklin’s retirement while the AFL great boarded a flight to he and wife Jesinta’s Gold Coast house.

Many hoped Franklin would return to the SCG in an official capacity at least one final time so fans could pay their respects to one of the game’s greatest players.

Franklin’s farewell would add even more meaning to Saturday week’s clash, which depending on this week’s results could determine whether the Swans qualify for finals after a remarkable form surge.

The Swans take on Adelaide in Adelaide this Saturday.

Franklin played 172 games and kicked 486 goals for the Swans since joining the club from Hawthorn on a landmark nine-year contract.

He signed a one-year deal at the close of last season to play in 2023 before announcing his retirement at the end of July.
