Saul “Canelo” Alvarez dominated Gennady Golovkin on the way to a 12-round unanimous decision in their anticipated third fight, although the scorecards had the boxing world blowing up.
Alvarez was dominant in the ring on Sunday, retaining his undisputed super-middleweight crown by unanimous decision, with two judges scoring it 115-113 and a third seeing it 116-112.
Mexico’s Alvarez, who fought Kazakhstan’s Golovkin to a draw in 2017, came away with a narrow majority decision when they met again in 2018.
While this fight may not have had the same drama, with Alvarez the clear winner, the close nature of the scorecards had many in the boxing world confused.
“Absurd to have it even 116-112. Stop that. Right guy won at least,” wrote prominent boxing journalist Dan Rafael.
“Those are three of the worst scorecards of all time,” added American professional boxer Caleb Truax.
