High profile footy journo Tom Browne suddenly resigns

Tom Browne has resigned from Channel 7, it has been confirmed by his new employer.

The Herald Sun first reported the high profile journalist has accepted a position outside the footy industry and will also be leaving Melbourne.

The experienced newsman reportedly dropped a bomb on Seven executives, recently telling them of his decision to step away.

The Herald Sun reports Browne is expected to continue in his role with Seven through to the end of the 2023 AFL season before taking up a position with MA Financial Group.

In a statement, the radio network said: “He will also still be contributing his three on-demand Triple M Footy news podcasts (Tom Browne’s News) per week and will take up his boundary role for Friday Night footy”.

MA Financial Group, a private sector firm, is owned by Sydney Swans chairman Andrew Pridham. Browne will be taking up a video content producer role, MA Financial Group has confirmed.

Browne has been with Seven since 2011 and was in 2021 promoted to the position of chief football reporter following Mark Stevens’ departure.

Browne’s wife Tara is originally from Sydney and the couple in March celebrated the birth of their second child together — daughter Camilla Grace Browne.

Browne, who is the son of son of Collingwood president Jeff Browne, worked as a lawyer from 2006-2009 before making the move into the footy industry.

The award-winning journalist will leave a hole in Seven’s coverage as one of the most talked about media figures in the game.

Browne was in 2019 awarded the Best TV/Radio/Online news reporter award at the Football Media Association Awards for his work on the Jaidyn Stephenson match-betting story at Collingwood.

He was also at the centre of a famous media beef with Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt.

More recently, Browne reportedly clashed with fellow footy journalist Marc McGowan in the changerooms following Carlton’s win over North Melbourne in April.

Browne was also the first journalist to report former Gold Coast coach Stewart Dew had been sacked by the club earlier this month.

Former AFL Media journalist Mitch Cleary remains with Seven after moving to the network in 2021.
