WHY DOCKERS SHOULD CHASE EAGLES STAR

Fremantle should consider trading in star midfielder Dom Sheed from cross-town rivals West Coast, according to former Dockers defender Lee Spurr.

Sheed in 2021 signed a contract extension with West Coast. While the Eagles at the time didn’t specify the length of the deal, reports indicated he’d recommitted to the club for a further four years.

The 28-year-old, who famously kicked the match-winning goal for West Coast in the 2018 Grand Final, has endured an injury-interrupted past two seasons.

Speaking to The West Australian, Spurr said Sheed was the type of player Fremantle needs, but added the Dockers would need to do work some magic at the trade table to get him considering, at this stage, they don’t hold a first-round pick in this year’s draft.

“Is Dom Sheed a possible trade and would he fit at Freo, a cross-town rival?” he told The West Australian.

“Inside-mid. Good skills. Experience. Big-game player. Can play wing, half-forward. He is not quick, so you don’t get speed with him, but you would get elite use.

“Does it get packaged into a deal? Is it a four-way club trade where Dom Sheed ends up at Freo? But how do they get a pick inside the first two rounds, what do they have to give up?”

West Coast faces a significant off-season, with coach Adam Simpson assuring frustrated supporters his club had a clear plan to regenerate the playing list via upcoming national drafts.

“We‘re going to transition the list pretty quickly, it’s going to be one of the youngest lists in the comp in a year or so. We want to get some picks at the top end if we can,” he said in June.

PORT BACKMAN OPEN TO MOVE

Contracted Port Adelaide defender Tom Clurey is open to the prospect of finding a new AFL team, reports AFL Media.

Clurey, who won’t play again this season due to a back injury, signed a contract extension in 2022 that tied him to the club until at least the end of the 2025 season.

But AFL Media reported on Thursday morning that Clurey was open to a trade this year in a bid for more senior opportunities.

Clurey has played 124 games for the Power since being drafted out of the Murray Bushrangers with Pick 29 in the 2012 draft.

The big-bodied backman earlier this year played four SANFL games and one AFL match, which was against the Crows in the Round 3 Showdown,

But after being sidelined for several weeks due to ongoing back pain, Clurey last week was ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to resect a bulging disc.
