AFL 2023 round 16 LIVE updates: Late out for the Blues in clash with Hawks at the MCG

Key posts

Couple of behinds for the Blues

The Blues have kicked a couple of behinds (McKay, Martin). Something Carlton fans would be accustomed too, as the Blues are ranked last for accuracy this season.

But Carlton have more control of the ball around the ground. They are dominating in uncontested possessions – 26 to 10 – and contested possessions – 17 to 8.

Curnow with first blood

Carlton’s forward star Charlie Curnow has kicked the first goal of the afternoon with the Blues second inside 50 entry.

We’re off!

The first game of the day is underway between Hawthorn and Carlton at the MCG.

The Blues are coming off a bye – and before that, a 59-point victory against Gold Coast, which broke a six game losing streak – while the Hawks last game saw them bow to the Suns by 67-points.

10 minutes till first bounce

Carlton need a win today against Hawthorn to stay in the hunt for (an admittedly unlikely) finals berth. Do you think they’ll get it done?

The Hawks have Chad Wingard, Fergus Greene and Josh Ward back in the side, while Tom De Koning is a late out for the Blues.

Carlton have Ed Curnow and Jack Silvagni returning to the side.

Carlton with a late change

Tom De Koning won’t be lining up today against Hawthorn. Lewis Young comes in to replace him in the Blues’ 22, with George Hewett as the sub.

Substitutes:

  • Finn Maginness for Hawthorn
  • George Hewett for Carlton

Your view: Who wins?

Good afternoon

Hello and welcome today’s AFL live blog. We’ve got a big day in store!

First up, Hawthorn and Carlton are meeting at the MCG. Can the Blues build on their pre-bye win over Gold Coast or will the Hawks notch just their fifth victory of the season?

Then, Melbourne are “hosting” GWS in Alice Springs and St Kilda will be looking to inflict further pain on West Coast in Perth. (Thoughts and prayers for the Eagles after that crushing 171-point loss to Sydney last weekend).

Please leave a comment at any time throughout the day to let us know your thoughts on the games. Do you see any upsets on the cards today?

Alright, let’s do this.
