Rain, rain, go away: Grim forecast as wet weather threatens Ashes nailbiter

Wet weather threatens to derail what promises to be an action-packed fifth and final day of the first Ashes Test, with Birmingham set to welcome heavy morning rainfall.

Australia goes into the final day at Edgbaston requiring 174 runs for victory with seven wickets to spare, although they have already lost David Warner (36), Marnus Labuschagne (13) and Steve Smith (6) early into the chase.

The visitors will resume play with Usman Khawaja (34*) and nightwatchman Scott Boland (13*) at the crease as they look to help nudge Australia towards victory in the first Test.

But it remains to be seen if a full day of cricket will be able to be played due to the grim forecast outlook in England’s second-largest city.

Per the BBC’s weather forecasts, there is a 90 per cent chance of rain in Birmingham from 6am to 8am (GMT).

The chance drops to 80 per cent from 9am to 11am before it dips further to 69 per cent from 11am, then to 46 per cent at 12pm.

Cricket fans will be hoping the outfield isn’t completely soaked by the expected morning rain to ensure as much cricket is able to be played on the final day as Australia pushes for victory.

Prior to the first Test, the weather forecast was quite bleak and many predicted the contest would be a washout.

However, plenty of action has transpired since and it was only on day three that play had to be suspended due to inclement weather.
