Man Utd-Leeds, Chelsea-Liverpool PL games off

The Premier League clash between Manchester United and Leeds has been called off while Chelsea vs. Liverpool is also postponed ahead of the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II, the Premier League announced Monday.

The match between Brighton and Crystal Palace has also been called off because of the lack of police resources with the funeral for the queen taking place next Monday.

The U.K. has entered a period of national mourning following the death of the queen on Thursday, and last weekend’s Premier League fixtures were cancelled as a mark of respect.

However, the Premier League will return this weekend with seven out of the 10 matches set to go ahead.

A Premier League statement read: “Following extensive consultation with clubs, police, local Safety Advisory Groups and other relevant authorities, there was no other option but to postpone the three fixtures.

“The Premier League would like to thank the U.K. Football Policing Unit and other police forces across the country, as well as our broadcast partners, for their support during this process, and will continue to liaise with them ahead of the weekend.

“For the matches being played during the period of National Mourning, tributes will be paid to The Queen at Premier League stadiums. New dates for the postponed matches will be announced in due course.”
