‘Don’t let the fans suffer right?’ Latrell’s cheeky dig at NRL as Souths star faces big ban

The fallout has continued from Sunday’s wild elimination final between the Roosters and Rabbitohs with Tom Burgess in danger of being rubbed out for the rest of the season after he was charged twice, while New Zealand’s World Cup hopes have been rocked with one of their stars facing a monster ban.

There were five charges issued after a record seven sin bins were handed out in an explosive match that saw South Sydney eliminate its biggest rival with a 30-14 win at Allianz Stadium.

Burgess was one of the players sent to the sin bin for a high shot on Matt Lodge which attracted a grade one careless high tackle charge that will see him cop an $1800 if he takes the early guilty plea.

But it’s his high tackle on James Tedesco that could see him sidelined for the rest of the season with the Englishman looking at a two-week ban if he takes the early guilty plea, while it’s three matches if he fights the grade two careless high tackle charge and loses.

Roosters fans were enraged that Burgess was allowed to stay on the field for the high hit that forced Tedesco off for an HIA which he failed and forced a major backline reshuffle that the hosts never recovered from.

If Burgess accepts the charge then he’ll miss Saturday’s match against the Sharks and then next week’s preliminary final against Penrith if the Rabbitohs get there.

Latrell Mitchell produced a cheeky social media post calling for Burgess to get off after taylan May was given a delayed ban for assault, with Peter V’landys saying he did not want the fans to suffer.

“Starting to wonder where we find a consistent ground,” Mitchell wrote on Instagram.

“NRL surely the fans would love to see big Tom Burgess play finals footy!

“Don’t let the fans suffer right?”

While Burgess’ ban has immediate consequences, New Zealand could be without Jared Waerea-Hargreaves for a large chunk of the World Cup after the Roosters enforcer was slapped with a grade two dangerous contact charge.

The veteran front-rower slammed Burgess’ head into the ground and dropped an elbow as he was going to the turf which forced his rival out of the game and allowed South Sydney to bring on their 18th man in the second half.

Waerea-Hargreaves is looking at a three-game ban if he pleads guilty but will miss four matches if he fights the charge and loses.

There were two other charges to come out of Sunday’s wild encounter with Joseph Suaalii and Taane Milne able to accept fines for their grade one offences.
