Dockers great stars with SIX goals in footy comeback

He’s 37 years of age, but David Mundy hasn’t lost a step – or his kicking boots – since retiring from Fremantle at the end of last season.

In his first game since retiring, Mundy booted six goals in his one-off appearance for the Carngham-Linton Saints, propelling the side to a 79-point win over Beaufort at Linton on Saturday.

Mundy’s appearance was part of the Carlton Draft series, which aims to give community football clubs a boost, with six lucky clubs having drafted a former AFL great for a one-off appearance.

Round 9

Big first half sees Dees home over Hawks | 01:03

The Fremantle champion looked engaged from the outset in a midfield role, racking up the footy as he did so often during his tenure at the Dockers, coupled with clean ball use.

He kicked a classy goal on the run from just inside the 50 metre arc as the Saints stormed to a 31-point lead at the close of the opening quarter.

Hints of fatigue began to creep into Mundy’s game near the close of the first half, but he emerged revitalised after the main break, with two goals on the run in the third quarter getting the crowd involved.

Eventually, Mundy was moved to full forward in the final quarter, which saw him add to his goal tally once more.

He kicked his sixth and final goal of the day as the final siren sounded on the 22.9 (141) to 9.8 (62) win.

Mundy helped the Saints supercharge an already impressive season, with the side unbeaten after four rounds.

He played 376 AFL games for Fremantle after being taken with pick No.19 in the 2003 draft, making him the Dockers’ games record holder.

The next AFL great to come out of retirement as part of the Carlton Draft is Kane Cornes, with the former Port Adelaide tagger playing for Moyston Willaura FNC next week.

He’ll be followed by Jordan Lewis, Josh Kennedy, Bernie Vince and Nathan Buckley.
