‘A great honour’: QRL confirm Ikin’s CEO appointment after Broncos exit

The Queensland Rugby League have confirmed Ben Ikin has been appointed as the organisation’s chief executive officer.

On Sunday, the Broncos announced Ikin had left his role as the club’s head of football operations after two years at Red Hill.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Broncos and certainly learned a lot,” Ikin said in a club statement.

Round 11

“I leave here knowing the football program is in better shape than when I arrived.

“There are a lot of good people at the Broncos doing great work, and I know that ultimate success for the club is getting much closer.”

Ikin will begin with the QRL on May 22, the same day the Maroons squad is announced.

QRL chairman Bruce Hatcher was excited to welcome their new CEO.

“Ben brings an immense amount of rugby league knowledge with him and is widely respected in the game,” Hatcher said in a statement.

“Part of our role in the game is from community rugby league to sub-elite, which is the Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership, and the significant contribution our clubs make to the NRL and NRLW.

“Ben has a thorough understanding of our people and these competitions and pathways, and knows what is needed for rugby league to grow and prosper in the years to come.”

Ikin humself said “it’s a great honour to be given this role”.

“The QRL has a very long, proud history and is responsible for a very important part of rugby league across the state.

“I look forward to working with our staff and stakeholders to ensure that the way we do things in Queensland is both preserved and respected.”

The 46-year-old has a long history with the Broncos having played the last four seasons of his 150-game NRL career with Brisbane before retiring in 2004.

Ikin’s joined the Broncos’ management sitting in 14th on the ladder and he leaves with Brisbane sitting outright first after 10 rounds of the 2023 season. 

Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy paid tribute to Ikin for his commitment to the club over the last two seasons.

“Ben has made a valuable contribution to our club since he arrived in mid-2021,” Donaghy said.

“The football program and playing roster needed an overhaul, and Ben very diligently worked with other key staff to knock both into shape, and our results this year reflect those efforts.

“We thank Ben for his contribution and wish him all the best for the future.”
