‘Don’t even have hands on him’: Hess sin-binned for ‘blatant’ trip on Sharks star

Cowboys forward Coen Hess could be in hot water with the match review committee after he was sin-binned for tripping Sharks centre Jesse Ramien.

The incident in the 55th minute of the Sharks’ 42-6 win over the Cowboys saw Hess blatantly throw his leg out after being stepped by Ramien.

“A couple of Sharks players weren’t happy, they might look at this for a trip from Coen Hess,” Cooper Cronk said.

“Has he stuck out his right leg and made contact with Jesse Ramien? Yes he has.”

“It is a penalty we can be certain of that, but is it any more?” Dan Ginnane said.

Referee Gerard Sutton ruled Hess made no attempt at a tackle and placed him on report before sending him for a 10-minute spell.

“You don’t even have hands on him,” Sutton said.

“Yes 10 in the bin and that is hard to argue,” Ginnane said.

Cronk believes Hess deserved to be sin-binned because he made no attempt at a tackle and made considerable contact with his leg.

“In terms of the replay it looked quite blatant because his hands weren’t even close,” Cronk said.

“He was stepped after the footwork from Ramien and then just stuck the right leg out and made a fair amount of contact.”

“It is funny tripping used to be a straight send-off and I’m talking 20 or 30 years ago,” Ginnane said.

“Tripping was a bit more prevalent.”
