Pies to appeal Adams ban at marathon tribunal hearing

Collingwood’s Taylor Adams will be one of three players to face the AFL tribunal on Tuesday night after the Magpies elected to appeal his one-match ban for a dangerous tackle.

Adams was suspended for one week for a tackle on Seb Ross, which was graded as careless conduct, high contact and medium impact.

Ross was being tackled by Beau McCreery and Tom Mitchell when Adams rushed to the contest and helped bring the Saints’ midfielder to ground, but match review officer Michael Christian deemed the tackle to be worthy of a suspension.

Adams will miss next Tuesday’s blockbuster Anzac Day clash with Essendon if unsuccessful.

The Bombers will also be at the tribunal to try and overturn captain Zach Merrett’s one-match ban for a dump tackle on Melbourne’s Tom Sparrow.

Like Adams’ tackle, Merrett’s was also graded as careless conduct, high contact and medium impact, handing him a one-week suspension.

Eight cases have already been before the tribunal this season. Will Day was unsuccessful last week in his attempt to overturn a two-week suspension for a dangerous tackle, which was graded as high impact, while Nathan Broad copped four weeks in round two for a tackle graded as severe impact.

Geelong last week accepted a one-week ban for Gary Rohan, which was graded the same as Adams’ and Merrett’s tackles.

The tribunal hearing will also see Saints forward Anthony Caminiti face the music for striking Collingwood defender Nathan Murphy, which left him with concussion.

Murphy is set to miss Anzac Day under the league’s concussion protocols, while Caminiti could be slapped with at least three weeks if found guilty, after the incident was graded intentional conduct, severe impact and high contact.

The Pies have already ruled out Mason Cox from returning for the feature match, while Dan McStay injured a finger tendon against the Saints, leaving the Magpies thin on tall stocks.

Nathan Kreuger is a chance to return to the senior side, after playing his first VFL game on Sunday for Collingwood, while Jordan De Goey is all but certain to play after he was a late withdrawal for the Saints match with illness.

Merrett’s case is due to be heard at approximately 4pm AEST, with Caminiti at 5.30pm and Adams at 7pm.
