‘Carried in obvious pain’: AFL great rushed to hospital after horrific suburban footy injury

AFL/VFL games record holder Brent Harvey has been rushed to a Victorian hospital after suffering a horror leg injury in a suburban footy match.

The North Melbourne club legend broke his right leg below the knee while playing for North Heideburg on Saturday.

Harvey, a Roos premiership winner in 1999, was taking part in the opening round of the Northern Football League on Saturday when disaster struck.

Harvey landed awkwardly during the clash with rivals Heideburg as play was immediately stopped.

Club medics and trainers got to Harvey’s side quickly with an ambulance called.

But 7NEWS has revealed Harvey was forced to wait almost an hour for paramedics to arrive at the Shelley Street ground.

“He was carried from the field in obvious pain,” 7NEWS reporter Kate Massey revealed.

“He then had to wait almost an hour for an ambulance.

“It took 50 minutes before the Kangaroos legend was taken to hospital.”

Massey said Harvey remained in a Victorian hospital on Saturday night, with surgery expected.

The Herald Sun reported Harvey’s leg was broken in an “innocuous” incident, as images emerged of the AFL great visibly distressed.

Another sickening image taken from the ground showed a clear indent in Harvey’s shin as he grimaced in pain.

Harvey never missed more than a handful of games during his remarkable 21-year career as he proved one of the most durable players to ever play the game.

After playing only one game in his 1996 debut season, his lowest tally in a single season was 15 games as he went on to become a four-time All Australian and five-time club best and fairest.

Harvey had been combining his role as North Melbourne development coach while playing suburban football in 2023.

He only recently took centre stage at last weekend’s Good Friday AFL clash between Carlton and North Melbourne where he faced off in a charity goal contest with retired Blue Marc Murphy.

Without Harvey, North Heideburg couldn’t hold on as they suffered a one-point defeat.
