A limping Tiger Woods has withdrawn from The Masters, preventing him from having to play a marathon 29 holes on the final day at Augusta National.
Less than 24 hours after he made the cut in treacherous conditions, the 47-year-old told tournament officials on Sunday night (AEST) he wouldn’t be finishing his third round.
All players are expected to complete their third rounds and then return straight to the course to play their final 18 holes after a rain-marred tournament.
Woods has visibly been in pain walking the course’s undulating layout on his bionic right leg, which he almost lost in a high-speed car crash in 2021. It’s the second time he has withdrawn from a major championship in the last two years after not finishing the PGA Championship in 2022.
Woods (+9) equalled a Masters record for most consecutive cuts made (23) when he scraped into the third round on the number on Sunday morning (AEST), claiming he was looking forward to playing another 36 holes.
But after playing the first seven holes of his third round in six-over, the five-time Masters winner was last of the 54 golfers who made the cut, 22 shots behind leader Brooks Koepka.
Before the tournament began, Woods said his leg was in more pain than last year at The Masters, when he remarkably made the cut and walked all 72 holes in his first major appearance since the crash.
Rory McIlroy went as far as to say Woods would still be a major contender if he didn’t have to walk the course, which has been at its most punishing this week.
