Michael Schumacher’s skiing accident had “consequences”, a close family friend has revealed in a rare update on the Formula 1 legend’s condition.
Schumacher, 54, was gravely injured in a skiing accident in France in 2014 and was placed in a medically-induced coma.
His wife Corinna has been caring for him at their mansion near Lake Geneva, Switzerland, since and his condition has been shrouded in secrecy.
Few people have visited Schumacher since the accident and he has never been seen in public.
But Jean Todt, Schumacher’s former boss at Ferrari, is within the family’s inner circle and often stops by to spend time with the F1 great, who won a record seven world championships.
He called for the family’s privacy to be respected during an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera
“Let’s leave him alone,” Todt said.
“We respect the privacy wishes of Corinna and her children, although we know of course that the accident had consequences.
“But anyone who says he knows something, knows nothing.
“I always go to see him. He and his family are my family.”
Todt worked with Schumacher at Ferrari when the German won five consecutive world championships between 2000 and 2004.
Schumacher won his first two titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995.
Todt has previously said he watches Formula 1 races with Schumacher when he visits.
Schumacher’s son, Mick, raced in the sport in 2021 and 2022 for Haas, but was not re-signed for the 2023 season is now a reserve driver for Mercedes.
