Every squad, every game for new IPL season as $3m man leads massive Aussie contingent

It’s back.

The Indian Premier League, cricket’s most glamorous and lucrative T20 tournament, returns for its 16th edition this weekend, with ten franchises fighting for the coveted trophy over the coming eight weeks.

The competition gets underway on in the early hours of Saturday morning — Gujarat Titans, the reigning champions, will host the Chennai Super Kings at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium at 1am AEDT.

Australia paceman Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc elected not to take part in this year’s IPL to manage their workloads ahead of a busy winter campaign in England, which includes the World Test Championship final and the Ashes.

Earlier this month, West Australian seamer Jhye Richardson, signed by the Mumbai Indians for $270,700 at this summer’s Auction, was ruled out of the tournament after undergoing surgery on his hamstring.

Josh Hazlewood, still recovering from an Achilles injury, will miss the initial stages of the IPL, but remains hopeful of turning out for Royal Challengers Bangalore later in the season.

However, 13 other Australians are participating in this year’s tournament, including $3.15 million rookie Cameron Green, who became the second-most expensive IPL player in history after the Mumbai Indians snapped up the young all-rounder at December’s Auction.

Once daylight saving ends on Sunday, afternoon IPL matches will start at 8pm AEST, while evening games commence at midnight — India is four-and-a-half hours behind Australia’s east coast during the winter months.
