‘Never seen anything like that’: Tennis greats ‘can’t believe’ Kyrgios’ ‘illegal’ act

We have learned to expect the unexpected when it comes to Nick Kyrgios but even tennis legend Todd Woodbridge could not believe what he saw from the Australian on Monday.

With Kyrgios and Medvedev trading the opening two sets, the third shaped as pivotal in determining who took out the blockbuster fourth-round meeting between the pair.

And in the third round Kyrgios had a big chance to get the first break point after Medvedev sent a shot into the air at 30-30 in his second service game.

The shot was going out but Kyrgios then inexplicably ran onto his rival’s side of the court and smashed the ball.

“I’m not sure that is allowed,” Todd Woodbridge said in commentary.

“This is going to be an issue. You can’t do this. You cannot cross the net. The ball’s not dead yet. Kyrgios has basically leant in front of the net and that’s an illegal shot.”

It was judged to be a foul shot and Medvedev went on to hold in what could be a crucial point in the match.

“What an error in judgment,” Woodbridge added.

“That should have been break point. Oh dear. What will be the repercussions of that? I’ve never seen anything like that in all my time in tennis. That is crazy.”

“I can’t believe it,” Jelena Dokic added.

“I honestly thought it was legal,” Kyrgios was overhead telling his team later.

Kyrgios though responded positively after the mistake and eventually secured the first break of the set.

“That mistake he made, that usually would have rattled him but now he is playing better,” Dokic said.
