Injured Warner returning home

Injured Warner returning home

Delhi: David Warner is returning home to Australia after being ruled out of the Test series against India due to injury.

The veteran opener, who also suffered concussion, is still troubled by a hairline fracture in the elbow he suffered on day one of the second Test in Delhi.

Though Warner can still bat, there are concerns over his range of motion in the joint and the possibility of more damage should he be struck again.

Warner is expected to be available for the one-day international series in India following the Test series.

His early departure raises the question whether the 36-year-old has worn the baggy green for the last time.

One of Australia’s finest openers, Warner is in an extensive form slump stretching back to the start of last year. He is averaging 26.39 from his past 14 Tests and reached 50 in just three of his 24 innings.

Selectors face a tough call in deciding whether to take Warner to the Ashes in England, where Stuart Broad tormented him in a nightmare campaign in 2019.

Travis Head will continue opening in India as a horses-for-courses selection but coach and selector Andrew McDonald said the South Australian would return to the middle order in other conditions.

More to come.
