Warner to be ruled out of Delhi Test with concussion

Delhi: David Warner is set to be ruled out of the second Test with concussion.

Matthew Renshaw will come into the XI for the remainder of the second Test in Delhi.

The subbing is expected to be finalised later this morning (local time) when the paperwork is completed with the ICC after the team arrives at the ground for the second day of play.

Warner was hit on the helmet and the arm by India paceman Mohammed Siraj during a rugged innings of 15 on the first day.

The opener did not join his teammates in the field for the nine overs of India’s innings on the first evening due to those hits.

“I think the medical staff will have to assess tomorrow,” said Warner’s opening partner Usman Khawaja after play on the first day.

“He is a little bit weary at the moment. He obviously got a knock to the arm and then to the head and the head has made him a little bit weary at the moment and hence why didn’t come out to field. I think the medical staff will have to figure out what happens from here on in.”

The gutsy Warner, who is regarded as having a high pain threshold, batted for over an hour before paceman Mohammed Shami had him caught behind.

Warner’s substitution from the game has echoes of Steve Smith’s scratching from the Lord’s Test in the 2019 Ashes when Marnus Labuschagne was brought in at a crucial stage of the match.

In what proved to be a big break in Labuschagne’s career, the Queenslander made a vital half-century to help save the match for Australia before kicking on and becoming the world’s No.1 ranked Test batter.
