Australia has plenty to work on after being rolled for 91 to lose the first Test against India in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs.

On the list, according to former captain Allan Border, is that the Australians need to “play with a harder edge”.

As Border sifted through the wreckage of Australia’s car crash innings on Saturday, he noted how players have been commending opposition bowlers for good balls.

Among the more notable instances is Steve Smith offering the thumbs up when being beaten on the outside edge.

Speaking on Fox Cricket, Border said he wants it put to a stop.

“Play with a harder edge. I mean, we’re giving blokes the thumbs up when they’re beating us outside the off stump,” Border said.

“What the hell is going on? That is just ridiculous.”

He added: “Don’t go stupid, but Australia play hard nose cricket.

“We’re even giving someone thumbs up … bloody hell.”

Smith had the highest score by an Australian in the second innings with his 25 not out.

Not one other batter made more than 20 as Australia lost all 10 second innings wickets in a session to lose the Test.

The second Test starts on Friday.
