Siposs ‘100 per cent ready’ to play in Super Bowl, awaits call after injury

Former AFL forward-turned NFL punter Arryn Siposs says he has proven he is fit to play in the upcoming Super Bowl in Arizona, as he awaits a call on whether he will take to the field after an injury.

The former St Kilda player, now with the Philadelphia Eagles, suffered a high ankle sprain in December, tearing his deltoid ligament in a match against the New York Giants.

The injury has required lengthy rehab and has kept Siposs off the field, including in the Eagles’ NFC championship win against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday (AEDT).

But two weeks out from the Eagles’ Super Bowl clash with the Kansas City Chiefs, which will take place on Monday February 13, Siposs says he is now ready to play.

“I have proven all the physical side of things to show I am 100 per cent ready to go,” Siposs told SEN on Tuesday.

“The organisation is definitely well aware of that, and now it is basically just a call on them to see what they want to do.”

The injury had initially raised concerns that Siposs might need surgery, and he praised the team’s medical and strength and conditioning staff for readying him to potentially return for the season decider.

“I’m actually feeling pretty good. I could have actually played on the weekend just gone, but look, [it’s] just a matter of roster movements and things like that which makes it a little bit interesting to … get back out there.”

This would be the first Super Bowl for the Australian, who started his professional NFL career with the Detroit Lions in 2020 and moved to the Eagles in 2021. Siposs was taken by the Saints with pick 75 in the 2010 AFL draft, playing with them until 2015.

“I was obviously not fortunate enough to be part of an AFL grand final day,” he said. “I know this going to be a huge occasion.”

If he plays for the Eagles in the Super Bowl, he will take to the field with another Australian, but with an NRL connection – former South Sydney junior Jordan Mailata, who signed with Eagles in 2018.

“He’s a great person and obviously [this] is something we are looking forward to achieving together,” Siposs said of Mailata.

He described the Eagles side, which also includes Australian Matt Leo, as bringing together athletes with unique skills.

“There’s honestly some guys here who are six foot eight, and can still run under five seconds [over] 40 yards on a sprint. It’s incredible, they just move so well. Then obviously you have the quick wide receivers who are incredible to watch in terms of their speed,” Siposs said.

“That’s what probably makes this game so unique, there are so many different roles that are needed to go out there and execute.”
