‘Try to get hot and sexy’: Smith delivers gold in first Roosters interview

Brandon Smith’s first interview as a Rooster went exactly as expected with the new recruit talking about his plans for a “hot and sexy” body before he heaped praise on his new teammates ahead of the upcoming NRL season.

Smith looms as one of the most important signings this year after he left the Storm in a move that led to regular Roosters rake Sam Verrills opting to join the Titans for a starting role.

The 26-year-old international is enjoying life in Sydney’s eastern suburbs where he lives just 600 metres away from North Bondi.

“It’s been really tough,” he said.

“I’m getting used to the training with a lot of long distance stuff. I’m loving it because I try to get hot and sexy and fit for a job.

“Hopefully after another 47 more days, I’ll look good at Bondi Beach with my shirt off. That’s not why I’m getting fit – rugby league is my number one.”

Roosters coach Trent Robinson will want to test Smith’s fitness out now to make sure he has the motor to punch out big minutes if required.

Smith will partner James Tedesco, Sam Walker and Luke Keary in one of the best spines in the league, and the new recruit revealed what’s impressed him the most so far.

“I don’t want to give any secrets away, but I’m gelling really well with Sam and Keary,” he said.

“They’re pretty loud for people that are so small and short… they’ve got big voices. We’ve still got a long way to go before Round 1.”

Smith is no stranger to most of the Roosters squad given he teamed up with Joseph Manu and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves at last year’s World Cup, but there are some new faces who have already impressed him.

One of those is big man Matt Lodge who was outstanding for the club after he moved to Sydney during the 2022 campaign and will need to be even better with veteran Siosiua Taukeiaho moving on.

“I didn’t know what to think of him when I first came here,” Smith said.

“He looks like he’s about to kill everyone in the changing room at times, but when you have a conversation with him, he’s a really good fella.

“I didn’t realise how fit a lot of the forwards are here. They’re big boys but they can really move their legs, so it’s been good to watch.

“I’m very fortunate that I’ve known Jared and Joey from those camps, and I’ve met a lot of the boys through rugby league so it’s made everything good.”
