‘I’m done’: Warner opens up on cricket backflip as broken six-year diary promise revealed

David Warner believes he is mentally ready for whatever challenges are thrown his way during Australia’s upcoming tour of India after initially vowing to never play again in the subcontinent in 2017.

Warner was named in Australia’s 18-man squad for the tour, which comprises several familiar faces who played against India six years ago.

However, such an inclusion would have been unthinkable for Warner back then as a revealing moment in The Test, Amazon’s documentary on the Australian men’s cricket team, displayed.

The Aussies took the lead in the Test series against India with a big victory in Pune, but went on to lose the series 2-1.

In the documentary, Warner’s diary notes he took down in 2017 are featured.

“I am done,” Warner wrote.

“One game to go and never again touring subcontinent. Too much stress on my mind that I don’t need.”

However, the 36-year-old insists he now has the mental fortitude to ensure he wouldn’t be as frustrated as that.

“It was more about where you are mentally and where your game is,” Warner told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“I think I’m in a great headspace now where I can tackle that. It was one of those series where we won the first game and then we should have won in Bangalore and then it was a collapse from there.

“Mentally, we were exhausted.

“We’ve got a lot to look forward to this year. We’ve got the World Cup going back there. Each IPL I’m always looking to learn and improve my game on those low and slow wickets.

“I think from there I worked hard on my game to adapt.”

Australia’s tour of India kicks off with the First Test in Nagpur on February 9.
