Regardless of who wins the darts world championship final between Dutchman Michael van Gerwen and England’s Michael Smith, it’ll always be remembered for this unforgettable moment.
One leg of the duo’s battle at London’s Alexandra Palace is being hailed as the greatest ever in the history of darts after Smith achieved one of the sport’s rarest in-game feats — a ‘nine-darter’ — moments after van Gerwen had nearly done it himself.

Van Gerwen had taken the first set before Smith pulled back level in stunning fashion, hitting the perfect leg of nine darts — eight triples then a finish on a double
It was only the second nine-darter in a world championship final, and first since 2011. But what made the moment even more incredible was that van Gerwin nearly pulled off a perfect leg himself, missing a shot at double 12 himself moments before Smith did it.
The unbelievable moment — and the stunning level of quality on show between the pair — had fans in the venue losing it with commentator Wayne Mardle absolutely losing his mind.
“That is the most amazing leg of darts you will ever see in your life. I can’t speak, I can’t speak,” he said.
Smith leads 4 sets to 3 in the best-of-13 tournament decider.
