ABC news reported Hobart is bracing for severe thunderstorms with the potential for large hail and flash flooding this afternoon.
Meteorologist Michael Conway said it was a rare weather system for Tasmania with the potential for damage.
“The hail that may form in the severe thunderstorms could be large, which means they could be greater than two centimetres in diameter,” he said.
SES assistant director Leon Smith said it was forecast to impact the southern part of the state early in the afternoon and that people should be prepared.
“Seventy to 80 millimetres of rain involved in a thunderstorm cell within a short duration will lead to flash flooding,” he said.
“The conditions are such that it’s quite abnormal for Tasmania. We’re talking hailstones of significance — or potentially of hailstones of significance that will cause damage.”
Smith said the SES was liaising with the Bureau of Meteorology and BBL organisers around the weather and urged people to keep across any updates.
“The event organisers will obviously consider the weather situation and make a decision at the time,” he said.
The last placed Hurricanes are desperate for a win to keep in touch with the top five, while the Strikers can cement their place in the top four with a fourth win from seven games.
The Hurricanes are coming off a heavy defeat to the Sydney Thunder on New Year’s Eve, while the Strikers narrowly lost to the Stars on the same night.
Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short will be the danger men at the top of the order for the Hurricanes, while Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis have been in good form with the ball.
For the Strikers big hitting duo Matt Short and Chris Lynn will look to get the visitors off to a strong start at the top of the order, while Wes Agar and Rashid Khan have been in hot form with the ball.
It sets the scene for an intriguing clash between two of the pre-season heavyweights as we close in on the halfway mark of the tournament.
