Great Aussie cricket debate ends in landslide Warne win… and a major Bradman snub

Fox Cricket had been searching for Australian cricket’s most iconic player in history — and the winner will come as absolutely no surprise.

The Australian public had the chance to cast their vote over the past month with the release of Foxtel’s A Ton of Cricket, The Games Greatest Characters.

And after more than 2,000 votes, Shane Warne was on Tuesday announced as the winner in an absolute landslide.

Nearly a quarter of all voters picked the bowling legend, who won 443 of 2,239 votes.

Next on the list was former Australia batter Doug Walters, nearly 300 votes behind on 145.

The winner was announced on the second Day of the Boxing Day Test, which has featured several emotional tributes to Warne, who died in March.

Warne’s otherworldly skill with the ball, and his legendary charisma both on and off the field made him a clear favourite among voters.

Meanwhile, there was a tie for third with the late Andrew Symonds, and Dennis Lillee tied on 139 votes.

The top 10 featured three more Fox Cricket commentators with Kerry O’Keeffe (6th), Adam Gilchrist (8th) and Brett Lee (10th) all at the pointy end.

There was no room for cricket’s greatest ever batter, Sir Donald Bradman, who was edged out of the top 10 by two votes.

Voting began on Monday 28 November ahead of the first Test between Australia and the West Indies.

It ran until Friday December 16, the day before the first Test against South Africa.
