Australia to face India at world’s biggest stadium as Border-Gavaskar fixtures confirmed

Australia will play India at the world’s biggest cricket stadium for the first time early next year, after the BCCI confirmed the fixtures for the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

Cricket.com.au reported the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed Ahmedabad, the 132,000-capacity stadium will host the climax of Australia’s first men’s Test series in India in six years.

The four-Test campaign will get underway in Nagpur on February 9, before matches in the capital Delhi (from February 17) and Dharamsala (March 1).

The Ahmedabad Test (March 9) could also be a day-night match played with a Pink ball.

The last Test at Ahmedabad was played under lights when England lost to India inside two days in 2021.

Dharamsala, in the foothills of the Himalayas mountain range, was where Australia last played a Test in India 2017, when the then skipper Steve Smith met the Dalai Lama.

India vs Australia Tests had previously been played in Delhi in 2013 and 2008, while Nagpur last hosted Australia in 2008.

Australia last played a One Day International at Ahmedabad in 2011, with Smith the only remaining player from that match.

The stadium has undergone a $AUD130 million overhaul and is named after current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The venue hosted the Indian Premier League final in 2022 in front of a record crowd of 101,566.

The 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy could be the last four-Test series between Australia and India, with future series expected to include five matches.
