After achieving what most of the sporting world didn’t think they could, the Socceroos have made it to the round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
A mouth-watering contest against Argentina on Sunday morning (at the somewhat friendly time of 6am in Sydney) awaits.
If you plan to cheer on our stars from the comfort of your bed, SBS is your best bet.
If you’re feeling a little more adventurous – or patriotic – there are plenty of pubs and clubs across the city taking advantage of the state’s relaxed licensing rules: venues will be allowed to stay open until 5am on Thursday morning if they’re broadcasting the match.
Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour
A hastily convened, free and family-friendly live site will be in place for the game, seemingly after the state government saw the throngs of Melburnians at Federation Square for the Socceroos’ group games.
Maroubra Beach
Randwick Council are hosting a free outdoor live screening of the match at Arthur Byrne Reserve, across from McKeon Street Plaza. Local businesses will open to sell breakfast and coffees and Maroubra United Football Club (whose colours are also green and gold) will be running a breakfast barbecue.
Enmore Park
In response to huge popular demand, Inner West Council is hosting a live event. “This will be a huge moment for Australian football,” Mayor Darcy Byrne said. “It’s only right that Socceroos fans be able to gather together in the public domain to cheer on our boys.”
Beaman Park, Earlwood
Canterbury-Bankstown Council, along with Cooks River Titans and Hurlstone Park Wanderers will be opening Beaman Park to the public. With free activities for the kids, canteen facilities, and a barbecue for breakfast, it promises to be a memorable morning.
Macquarie Mall, Liverpool
Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun has arranged for the big game to be shown live from the CBD, calling it “the Federation Square of Sydney”.
“Sunday is sure to be both incredible and nerve-racking for us all,” he said. “The golden generation made history in 2006 and hopefully the Socceroos can go one better.”
Cheers Bar, Sydney CBD
It’s “the place where good sports meet”, and you can be sure of a few good sports – win or lose – at the George St sports bar.
Ritz Cinema, Randwick
Watch the match on the big screens of the iconic art deco cinema for $10 – with a popcorn.
The Marlborough Hotel, Newtown
The Marly’s live viewing area is showing every game this World Cup.
The late-night Broadway venue is streaming every game live – with a big screen to match the big occasion.
Commercial Hotel, Parramatta
The giant screen at the Parramatta icon will be switched on for the big game.
Coogee Bay Hotel, Coogee
There are two options for you at this iconic hotel: Selina’s nightclub or the adjacent beer garden. Both will show the game.
The Henson, Marrickville
The game will be “live and loud” for Inner West locals, shown in the front bar.
Dee Why RSL, Dee Why
The folks at Dee Why are promising “the biggest screen on the beaches”. Find out if it’s true.
Hotel Steyne, Manly
Magic’s is showing the game at its sports bar.
Sterlo’s Sports Bar, Parramatta
It’s part of the Parramatta Leagues venue, but football fans will still be welcomed at the sports bar with food and drinks served until 5am. If you live in Parramatta don’t forget to become a member.
Of course, you can follow the Herald’s blow-by-blow coverage online – or pretend you watched the match by catching up on everything you need to know once you wake up.
