‘Frustrated’ Luka fumes, Mavs stunned by NBA battlers after unlikely hero’s ‘game of his life’

The Detroit Pistons have stunned Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks at home with a 131-25 win in overtime in the NBA’s lone game on Friday (all times AEDT).

The Mavericks forced the extra period after rallying from being down eight with 1:47 left in the fourth including consecutive threes to Tim Hardaway Jr and Doncic and a Reggie Bullock reverse layup before Isaiah Stewart missed a potential game-winning triple for Detroit.

Dallas went on a 6-2 run to start overtime to go up 123-119, but Jaden Ivey, who returned from a three-absence with a knee injury, stepped up with two huge consecutive plays – a driving layup followed by a massive three-pointer to put Detroit up two.

Killian Hayes was the real hero for the Pistons though, knocking down back-to-back threes inside the last minute and a half to drag the hosts over the line.

“This is Killian Hayes’ game of his career,” Pistons commentator George Blaha said.

Hayes has impressed since stepping into the starting point guard role for Cade Cunningham (shin) to revive his career, and this may have been the former Pick 7’s best game of the season yet.

He finished with 22 points – eight of those scored in overtime – on 10-of-13 shooting, plus eight assists and four rebounds.

“Seeing the first one go in felt good … it just felt right to shot another and another,” Hayes said of his game-winning daggers.

“It just feels good to win … we didn’t fold. In overtime, we stayed strong and played our defence and we hit shots.

“We’ve played good for a while and we deserved that. It feels good.”

Elsewhere, Bojan Bogdanovic topscored for Detroit with 30 points and Marvin Bagley added 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Doncic posted 35 points for Dallas, who fell to 10-11, to go with 10 assists, while Hardaway Jr (25 points) and Christian Wood (25 points, eight rebounds) were also busy for the visitors.
