Sydney’s bold draft play and how GWS stared them down

By Marc McGowan

Sydney warned the Giants before placing their shock bid on academy prospect Harry Rowston on Monday night, hoping to convince them to give up valuable draft collateral.

The bid was the talk of the first night of the draft, but there was more to the story that unfolded between the cross-town rivals. The Age can reveal the Swans’ behind-the-scenes AFL draft play to effectively hold Greater Western Sydney to ransom, with Giants recruiting manager Adrian Caruso standing firm.

The idea was for GWS to give up a future first-round pick to Sydney for the right to climb to what had become pick 16 and get ahead of any Rowston bid.

Blues draftee Hollands looks to Walsh for guidance

By Jon Pierik

Prized Carlton draftee Oliver Hollands says he is ready to pick apart teammate Sam Walsh’s game in a bid to help his own development.

Hollands was still buzzing on Tuesday, having been taken with the Blues’ top pick, No.11 overall, in Monday night’s AFL national draft.

He joined several of his fellow first-round draftees at a gathering at Harbour Esplanade at the Docklands, but Hollands had one advantage many of the others didn’t – he had been selected by the club he grew up cheering for.

More trades to come? Demons open to Giant move

By Marc McGowan

Melbourne look set to be one of the suitors for Greater Western Sydney’s coveted pick at the start of round two after drafting a second key forward in as many years.

The Demons aggressively tried but failed to move up the AFL draft order, including offering three first-round selections for Essendon’s picks four and 22 at the time.

But national recruiting manager Jason Taylor, one of the key architects of Melbourne’s drought-busting 2021 premiership, has foreshadowed a move for the GWS pick.

Greetings, everybody

By Ronny Lerner

Hello everyone and welcome to our rolling coverage of the second night of the 2022 AFL national draft.

Last night, 21 youngsters had their dreams come true after being selected by various clubs in the first round of the draft.

Tonight, the remaining rounds of the draft will take place at Marvel Stadium.

As many as 65 more picks are live as it stands, but as we know, they all won’t be used.

Just how many more youngsters will realise their AFL dream tonight? We’ll find out soon enough.

Father-son prospects Alwyn and Jayden Davey are set to make their way to Essendon, following in the footsteps of their father Alwyn snr.
