Aussie spin prospect’s strong Test statement as Windies son-of-a-gun pushes for debut

Young Victorian off-spinner Todd Murphy has made a strong audition in front of Australian selectors with a dominant display on day two of the Prime Minister’s XI’s clash against the West Indies.

The 22-year-old, who impressed playing for Australia A in Sri Lanka and looms as Nathan Lyon’s heir apparent, took three wickets and conceded just 27 runs with eight maidens off his 22 overs at Manuka Oval.

It was Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the son of West Indies great Shivnarine, who starred for the visitors as he posted an unbeaten 119 at stumps.

But Murphy’s run of wickets took down the West Indies’ middle order and allowed the PM’s XI to limit their opposition to 7-234.

That came after the hosts added 25 runs to their overnight score of 9-297, posting 322 for the Windies to chase.

Chanderpaul, 26, is yet to play at Test level but was the second-highest run scorer in West Indies first-class cricket this year.

His strong performance in Canberra will have him in the mix to feature in the first Test against Australia in Perth beginning on November 30.
