Since joining Garry Lunn at Dubbo, Knife’s Edge is unbeaten, finally being trained as a stayer, and could earn his biggest cheque in the Country Classic at Rosehill on Saturday after pulling off a Highway heist last start.
The six-year-old is still owned by former trainer Luke Morgan and his mate James Carolan, but their feeling that a change of scenery would help Knife’s Edge has proven right and profitable.
“Luke breaks in a lot of horses and doesn’t have the time to put into a stayer; that’s how he ended up with me,” Lunn explained. “He might be the best horse I’ve had for a while.
“When he got here, I looked at that Highway at Newcastle and said if he goes well there we would be here. He has won twice, so we’re here.”
Knife’s Edge won at Dubbo over 1400m to start his time with Lunn, and then got on to dry, firm ground at Newcastle, where he scooted through the fence to win by four lengths over the mile at $26.
“We got $41 and the boys had a big result at Newcastle,” Lunn said. “He is so much better on dry tracks, and he showed it. We weren’t surprised at all.
“He is still on his way up for this race. I think he could be competitive in Sydney staying races on the way he works, so he is a big chance on Saturday.
“He is going to need luck at the right time, but he’s pretty good, as he showed at Newcastle.”
At Newcastle, Knife’s Edge got back to near last and charged home, but he should be able to use his good barrier in the Country Classic. Lunn is wary of Little Dance winner Dream Runner, which will carry only 59.5 kilos after Tyler Schiller’s claim.
“Jason [Collett] gave him a really good rap after Newcastle. It’s just disappointing he’s getting married on the weekend. I tried to find someone who rides like him and looked everywhere, and Tom Sherry was available, which was perfect,” Lunn said.
“I think the Canberra horse [Dream Runner] is very well in at the set weights. We are some 25 points below him in the ratings, so if we can win it will just show how good he is.”
