‘We’re all fighting’: Reynolds weighs in on Broncos’ heated fullback battle

Broncos captain Adam Reynolds have revealed the frontrunners for Brisbane’s vacant fullback and five-eigthth positions as a number of players remain in a heated selection battle.

Reece Walsh, Herbie Farnworth and wanataway Tesi Niu are all battling for the No.1 jersey and coach Kevin Walters revealed there wasn’t a clear frontrunner to start at the back in 2023.

The Red Hill side secured the marquee signature of young gun Walsh in July and the experience halfback is tipping the 20-year-old to get the nod, while Farnworth will likely ply his trade in the centres.

“(Walsh) is pretty good out the back,” Reynolds said to The Daily Telegraph.

“We’ve had a couple of sessions already and things are moving pretty nicely.

“It’s just about continually working on our relationship both on and off the field, making sure we have the chemistry so we can click when it counts.

“We just have to find out what works best for us as a club.

“(Farnworth) has played in the centres for England at the World Cup and he had a terrific World Cup.

“He definitely showed what he’s capable of and that was coming back after a pretty significant injury. We just have to get him on board and fit and healthy again.

“We’re all fighting (for places) and it’s only going to make us a better team.”

Meanwhile, young gun Ezra Mam is locked in a battle with new recruit Jock Madden for the No.6 jersey.

While Madden made the switch from the Tigers seeking regular first grade football, Reynolds is tipping Mam to start against the Panthers in Round 1, despite being dropped last in the 2022 season.

“I think (Mam) showed enough with what he did last (season). He came in under a lot of pressure and handled it better than most,” Reynolds said.

“He’s still a young fella but he’s tough. He’s only going to get better throughout the pre-season.”
