History made as ex-Socceroo to become first Aussie manager in ‘big five’ European league

Patrick Kisnorbo will become the first Australian to manage in one of Europe’s ‘big five’ leagues after the Melbourne City A-League men’s boss was hired by ES Troyes AC.

The former Socceroo will make the move to the French Ligue 1 side which is also part of the City Football Group, owned by Manchester City.

Kisnorbo played for, captained and then coached Melbourne City, leading them to consecutive premierships across the last two seasons as well as the 2021 championship. They are unbeaten so far in the 2022-23 A-League campaign.

ROOS RATINGS: Defender lives Mbappe nightmare; Mooy falls flat as A-League stars shine

During his playing career the defender spent time at Leicester City and Leeds United in the Championship as well as making 18 appearances for Australia.

“We consider ourselves lucky to have been able to hold onto Patrick for so long, and we celebrate what he has achieved at Melbourne City. He has been instrumental in establishing our club’s philosophy and methodology in a way that it is now sustainable and can be built upon further,” Melbourne City FC CEO Brad Rowse said.

“Our success has come because we are all committed to the way we approach the game and the resulting ways in which we train and play. That approach is now fundamental to the club’s identity. It will be the foundation that Rado and the coaching team will continue to build upon and evolve as we continue the push for silverware.”

Troyes currently sits 13th in Ligue 1, but just one point and goal difference outside of the bottom four relegation places.

Current City A-League women’s coach Rado Vidosic will take the helm as interim men’s boss.

“Rado has a long history in the A-League Men’s competition, previously involved as a Technical Director, Assistant Coach and Caretaker Coach at Brisbane Roar, plus time as an assistant at Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix,” Rowse said.
