AFLW Grand Final sold out as ‘peeved’ Lions defend ground that’s ‘as good as the NFL’

AFLW Grand Final sold out as ‘peeved’ Lions defend ground that’s ‘as good as the NFL’

The AFLW grand final is officially a sell out, just hours after tickets went on sale on Monday.

Despite criticism of the match being held at Brisbane’s brand new $80m Springfield training facility, tickets for Sunday’s decider were snapped up quickly.

The AFL had frozen ticket prizes for the Brisbane v Melbourne grand final, with adult entry $10 and children able to attend for free.

Furphy has made the commitment to provide equal support to its AFL and AFLW teams. Don’t support the AFLW? Unbelievable.

“It’s actually a purpose-built AFLW ground. It’s a stadium, it’s got grandstands, we’ve got open air here because of the weather,” he said on Monday.

“It’s not only the best place in Australia, I’ve been to (NFL teams) New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles – it’s every bit as good as those facilities.

“It’s our home for a long, long time and hopefully we’re playing plenty of Grand Finals here over the next few years.”

The Springfield venue, which holds 8000, only recently had turf laid but passed the AFL’s inspection in the lead up to Sunday’s event.

But with the venue brand new, neither the Lions or grand final opponent Melbourne have been on the field.

Melbourne midfielder Maddison Gay said the Demons weren’t worried about only accessing the ground on game day.

“We haven’t obviously been out there – no one’s played at that ground. We’re making history as we go,” she said on SEN.

“You can’t get caught up in the uncontrollable.

“We’ll leave that up to the AFL and the AFLW head honchos and they’ve obviously decided Springfield is the location and we look forward to flying out there Saturday and meeting the Brissie girls.

“It would be nice even to just see the ground but if not, that’s OK as well.

“We’ve played home and away games and not been on the field before the game day anyway so it won’t be too different.”
