Titans gun slapped with four-game ban for ugly lifting tackle as Tigers rookie faces sideline stint

Titans centre Brian Kelly has been slapped with a four-game ban for an ugly tackle that saw him sent off against the Knights on Sunday.

Kelly was marched for a spear tackle on Dom Young in the 52nd minute and on Monday was charged with a dangerous throw by the match review committee.

The veteran will miss four games with an early guilty plea of five if he fights the charge and loses.

Meanwhile, Asu Kepaoa has copped a one-match ban for clumsy shoulder charge that allowed Dragons centre Zac Lomax to pick himself up and boot the matchwinning sideline penalty on Sunday.

Wests Tigers debutant Kitione Kautoga dropped the ball on halfway with two minutes left which saw Lomax break down the left wing.

Tigers centre Asu Kepaoa then came across in cover defence and cleaned up Lomax with a blatant shoulder charge.

“Lomax got hit pretty hard and high it seemed by Kepaoa, there’s a whistle but no decision yet,” Warren Smith said on Fox League.

“Now things are really flaring up. Jack Bird is in there. Kepaoa is the man they’re all after for the contact, and Lomax, if this is a penalty, you’d imagine would have a shot at penalty goal from the sideline to put the Dragons in front.”

“There’s the shot, it’s not bad,” Steve Roach said after watching the replay.

“The contact here of Kepaoa will be interesting, he gets him in the head, no question about that. It will look to be a penalty to the Dragons,” Smith said.

Referee Liam Kennedy then called out Kepaoa and sent him to the sin bin.

“Shoulder contact to the head, it’s on report and you’re in the bin,” Kennedy said.

“Are you serious,” Kepaoa responded to which Kennedy rebutted with a swift “go now mate”.

“After the Dragons were down to 12 on two separate occasions in the first half and going into the second now it’s the Tigers who will finish with 12, what a game this has been,” Smith said.

“There’s no question about the distance for Lomax, a prodigious kicker of the ball.”

Lomax had converted at just 47 per cent on the right-hand sideline this season, but he delivered with the game on the line.

“He strikes it well, bending it back and he’s kicked it,” Warren Smith said.

Meanwhile, Titans forward Isaac Liu was handed a fine for a crusher tackle.
