F1 world thrilled by surprise 2023 calendar call — though it only creates more questions

Formula 1 will return to the historic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium during the 2023 season, following fears the heritage track would be dropped from the calendar.

However F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali could not confirm whether Spa would remain a yearly fixture for 2024 and beyond amid an ongoing calendar squeeze, with new bids to host races appearing frequently.

There were suggestions the Belgian and French Grand Prix would no longer be yearly fixtures on the calendar, with F1 instead alternating between Spa and Paul Ricard.

Domenicali confirmed on Sunday night the Belgian Grand Prix would be part of the 2023 calendar, after its current deal runs out.

Race organisers have upgraded the circuit’s facilities and track safety in a bid to convince F1 it is worth a long-term deal, though discussions will have to be renewed next year and its permanent place remains uncertain.
