Recently, the Saints welcomed Brendon Goddard back to the club in a player development role, with the club great having played 49 games with McKenna during his time at Essendon.
SEN reporter Sam Edmund has since said Brisbane are “right in it up to their eyeballs” in the race for McKenna.
“I think it’s going to be Brisbane,” Edmund said.
“The early indication was that when he was coming back he wanted to come back in Melbourne but I don’t think that’s the case.
“I think Brisbane are right in it up to their eyeballs and he’d be a nice pick-up back there.”
McKenna also has a link at the Lions from his AFL days, with marquee recruit Joe Daniher having played alongside McKenna during the pair’s time at Essendon.
Essendon, Port Adelaide and Geelong are considered the other candidates to land McKenna.
The Cats initially loomed as key players, but this week re-signed midfielder Sam Simpson for another year, filling the side’s last vacant senior list spot.
