No score after 10 minutes

Manly winger Clayton Faulalo settles the nerves by successfully taking a high ball.

Same for Sharks No.1 William Kennedy not long after. No real chances yet from both sides. Nicho Hynes is looking to run the ball and attack.

Siosiua Taukeiaho has already chalked up 30 metres with ball in hand. Lots of ball in play time.

‘Don’t be fake’: Leniu doubles down on post-match tirade towards Thurston

A big story cooking in league land.

Roosters prop Spencer Leniu has accused Queensland Maroons great and Nine commentator Johnathan Thurston of being “two-faced” and “fake” following their on-field run-in at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Leniu is alleged to have called Thurston a “f—wit”, then a “f—ing c–t”, with the bad blood stretching back to Thurston’s views on Leniu’s eight-game suspension at the start of last season for racially vilifying Brisbane five-eighth Ezra Mam during a match in Las Vegas.

Taking to social media on Saturday morning, Leniu posted on his Instagram account: “I never wanted to talk to JT. He kept trying to come speak to me. I said, ‘Lad idc [I don’t care] if that you hate me for what I did [calling Ezra Mam a ‘monkey’ in Las Vegas]. But don’t come up to me asking me questions like we’re Algood (sic). Don’t be two face. Hate me lad I’m eetswa [sweet] with that. But don’t be fake. I hate fake people.”

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo on Saturday said there was nothing to investigate because there had been no complaint lodged by Thurston or Nine, the publishers of this masthead.

“We don’t have a complaint, it was a conversation between two people, and we don’t know what was said,” Abdo said.

Proszenko: There will be scrutiny on the loser of today’s first match

They might be in Perth, but the loser of this one won’t be able to hide for long from the media scrutiny that awaits them back in Sydney.

Manly’s best is good enough to challenge for the title, but their worst – and we saw it at Brookvale last weekend against the Storm – is diabolical. Unless they close the disparity, it’s going to be a long season.

What the teams are coming off

The Sharks went down narrowly to the Raiders last week, losing 24–20 in a game that could have gone either way.

Meanwhile, Manly were thumped by the Storm, conceding 48 points in a performance they’ll be desperate to move past.

Injuries haven’t helped their cause, with star fullback Tom Trbojevic still sidelined.

A big game looms for the No.7s on both sides, Nicho Hynes and Daly Cherry-Evans.

Here are the highlights for both games in case you missed.
